Puerto Vallarta Welcome Letters to Receive Artistic Makeover

Puerto Vallarta Welcome Letters to Receive Artistic Makeover

The Governing Board of the Vallarta Institute of Culture (IVC,) approved the project of the artist José Tomás Esparza León, to artistically refurbish the welcome letters to this tourist destination.

With a typical proposal and according to both the culture and image of Puerto Vallarta, the work is expected to be completed in a month and a half.

In an ordinary session of the IVC, the result of the call "Welcome to Puerto Vallarta: Project of Artistic Intervention of Letters for Artists" was approved, where the qualifying jury made an honorable mention to the proposal of José Tomás Esparza León for the aesthetic quality of his images that take up elements of the popular culture of Jalisco.

The acting mayor, Jorge Antonio Quintero Alvarado, pointed out that it is a typical proposal and in accordance with the culture and ideas of our country and state, in addition to the fact that the project includes the most representative elements of Puerto Vallarta such as the sea turtle, the whale, the crocodile, as well as the flora of the municipality.

Arturo Israel Dávila López, head of the IVC, briefly explained the process of evaluation of the contest for the intervention of the 14 letters, which were already in terrible condition. When the winner of the call declined the opportunity to artistically renovate our landmark welcome sign to the port, the proposal that received an honorable mention was analyzed by the qualifying jury, for which it was determined as the winner of the contest.

He also said that the award covers the authorship of the project and labor, while the institute will provide the materials required to carry out the project.

He announced that this week, with the support of municipal transit and maintenance elements, the letters will be transferred to a warehouse located in the municipal agency of Las Mojoneras, so that the artist can start working as soon as possible.

In turn, José Tomás Esparza thanked the board for the opportunity to translate his work into the welcome letters that are very important for Puerto Vallarta, and that will be the first impression of this city. He also stressed that the project will have the most representative elements of the flora and fauna of Puerto Vallarta.

He pointed out that they will redouble their efforts so that in approximately a month and a half Puerto Vallarta has the new welcome letters at the northern entrance to this tourist destination, and assured that the material that will be used in this project has a 5-year guarantee for the type of climate that prevails in the municipality.

Members of the IVC Governing Board congratulated the teacher José Tomás Esparza for this project that reflects the cultural identity of Puerto Vallarta.

It should be noted that the master craftsman José Tomás is part of a select group of distinguished masters, specializing in burnished clay, and has a career of more than 50 years in which he has created different pieces painted by hand with natural colors, in addition to more than 50 awards and recognitions.
