Jalisco Registers 86% Fewer Cases of Dengue Compared to Same Week of 2020

The State Network of Municipalities for Health highlights the success thanks to the massive elimination of breeding sites for mosquitos that transmit this disease, and renew their commitment to combat dengue.

In a clear downward trend in dengue cases this 2021, the State of Jalisco reports the confirmation of 47 cases of dengue this week compared to the same period of 2020 when 390 cases were registered, showing a reduction of 86.3%.

This reported by the Secretary of Health, Fernando Petersen Aranguren, while heading the second ordinary session of the Inter-institutional Commission "Transectorial Unit for the Prevention and Control of Vector-Borne Diseases of the State of Jalisco," chaired by the State Governor, Enrique Alfaro Ramírez.

This collegiate body brings together various agencies, municipalities, and organizations with the aim of planning, programming, coordinating, and promoting cooperation with the public to strengthen actions and strategies for preventing and combating the mosquito that transmits dengue Aedes aegypti.

“Jalisco occupies the ninth place at the national level by rate, that is, 0.57 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the sixth in the number of cases,”reported Petersen Aranguren, and he stressed the importance of citizen participation so as not to lower their guard with actions at home to prevent mosquito breeding.

Last May, Jalisco started the Interstate Operation to Fight Dengue 2021 with the state of Colima as a joint strategy to reduce the presence of the mosquito that transmits this disease.

The Fight Dengue Plan 2021 is based on these axes:

Social participation.

Inter-institutional strengthening.

Maintaining constant training.

Approach new mayors to prioritize the fight against dengue in municipal agendas.

Strengthen environmentally friendly measures as a means of biological control.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most important actions for the effective control and reduction of the threat of human vector-borne diseases are the reinforcement of actions and intersectoral collaboration, as well as achieving participation and mobilization in communities to reinforce prevention and control activities.

The call to citizens from all fronts continues aimed at eliminating at home all objects that can accumulate water and promote the reproduction of mosquitoes.

Guppy Fish for Biological Control of Dengue

Jalisco is already working with the introduction of guppy fish to prey on mosquito populations. The fish are placed in wells, pools, or containers where water has accumulated. The recommendation is to avoid putting chlorine or larvicides in the space where the fish are introduced. It is also requested not to feed the fish so that they eat the vector larvae.

The third ordinary session of this commission is scheduled for next August 26, where the preventive actions against dengue that have been implemented will be presented and discussed.

Actions taken so far in 2021:

1,082,176 homes have been visited, of which 58.26% were intervened.

639 “D” days, or massive eliminations of hatcheries.

4,293 tons of potential breeding sites have been eliminated.

43,666 tires have been collected.

24,959 homes have had their interiors sprayed.

74,788 hectares have been fogged.

14,552 ovitraps installed and monitored in priority locations.

8,179 training activities, health fairs, workshops, and municipal sessions have been carried out, attended by over 45,000 people.
