SADER Jalisco Helps Tajin Corp Grow Chiles and Generate Jobs in the North Region

In recent years the Northern Region of Jalisco has received unprecedented support for agricultural activities from SADER-Jalisco.

The support has involved various projects, such as the Territorial Development Programs for various products including the Persian lemon in Bolaños, cerril oregano in Mezquitic, calf raising in Villa Guerrero, chili peppers in Totatiche, and figs in Colotlán.

The intervention of SADER has also highlighted the induction of new agricultural products to the region, with the aim of facilitating the diversification of alternative crops, as seen with the fig, chili, and Persian lemon projects.

Mexico as a country has a deficit in the production of dried chili peppers, inspiring SADER Jalisco and Grupo Tajín to invest in growing chiles in the Northern Region aimed at reducing imports of this product, both from Asia and South America.

The manager of SADER Jalisco in the North Zone, Juan Pablo Fernández Jiménez, said that since last year they have been working on the introduction of this nightshade to the region, which involved a work of acclimatization and selection of the varieties of chili peppers according to the agroclimatic conditions of this demarcation.

He also explained that this project combines factors of protected agriculture with the use of rainwater, in addition to reducing the use of pesticides with the use of trap crops that are installed on the edges of the cultivated area, so that the impact of pests is mitigated.

He also mentioned that since it is a region where there is no history of the cultivation of chili on a large scale, a low incidence of pests is predicted.

In this productive project, SADER Jalisco contributed its part in the preparation of the lands, so that later the company could establish the project based on its business plan.

The project during 2020 involved the construction of macro tunnels, in addition to the installation of the fertigation system with pumping equipment, and the use of reservoirs to manage the plants.

In the current summer season, two harvest periods of chile de arbol are already scheduled, as a result of a concerted action between the private sector and the SADER Jalisco.

The hiring of 200 people is expected for the 13 hectares of plantations of the Tajín company in the Totatiche and Colotlán chile plantations.

The work will be from August 9 to September 25, in Santa María del Refugio and Bajío de Tochopa, in the municipalities of Totatiche and Colotlán, respectively.

On July 16, two information sessions will be held with those interested in joining this job opportunity; 11:00am at UNIRSE Colotlán, and 2:00 pm at the Totatiche City Council offices.
