Maintaining Tree Health in La Primavera Forest

Maintaining Tree Health in La Primavera Forest

The La Primavera Flora and Fauna Protection Area grants those who inhabit the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area environmental goods and services, and also houses great biodiversity and geomorphological elements.

To maintain this healthy ecosystem, the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet,) in conjunction with the Decentralized Public Organization Bosque La Primavera, the Trust for the Administration of the Forest Development Program of the State of Jalisco, and the community company of Ejido San Agustin, have carried out sanitation measures to protect the trees.

Permanent sanitation actions have been maintained to control true mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus), which mainly affects oaks, and thus minimize its negative effects. Sanitation actions are currently being carried out in the Llano Grande property, with an advance of 325 hectares and 1,761 trees rescued; The 400 hectares programmed for this area are expected to be completed in June.

From November 2016 to March 2021, a total of 1,347 hectares have been intervened, more than 23,500 trees have been rescued, and more than 141,000 mature mistletoe have been removed in the Ejido San Agustín, Ejido Huaxtla, and on the properties of the Government of Jalisco Agua Brava and Llano Grande. The goal through 2024 is to clean up 3,000 hectares that are considered critical due to the current affectation of mistletoe.

It should be noted that from the sanitation activities in the San Agustín Ejido, a community enterprise of the agrarian nucleus was formed, actively participating in the strategy with technical capacities and tree climbing, allowing the involvement of the inhabitants in forest management. It is necessary to monitor the intervened areas to prevent the juvenile mistletoes that have developed after sanitation reach their maturity stage, and return to being a source of reproduction.
