Jalisco Promotes Sustainability in the Productive Sector

More than 300 companies have been supported with state programs to generate sustainable production models.

Within the initiatives of various organizations to establish a dialogue towards COP-26, the Government of Jalisco, through the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET,) participated this week in the Business Leaders Forum: Increasing Ambition in the Private Sector, organized by the British Embassy in Mexico and the World Resources Institute (WRI.)

The Government of Jalisco, in line with organizations around the world, agree that the private sector is essential to achieve the commitments agreed by the participating countries in 2015, aimed at maintaining the planet's temperature at no more than 2° C above pre-industrial levels. The climate emergency requires joint and intersectoral action to reduce the emissions of Greenhouse Gases and Compounds that contribute to climate change, as well as adapt and reduce our vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.

During the forum, the initiative of the Business Alliance for Climate was presented, which aims to create a space to promote leadership and increase ambition towards the decarbonization of the economy in our State by 2050, as well as improve the competitiveness of the industrial sector at the national and international level. It also seeks to detonate low-carbon economic development, minimize the risks associated with climate change, and create new niches for innovation, entrepreneurship, and the attraction of investment and financial resources.

The productive sector has a great responsibility in the face of the climatic emergency, so to mitigate the increase in the global average temperature, the transition towards a resilient and low-carbon productive model must be accelerated. To achieve this, Jalisco has certification schemes for companies such as the Voluntary Environmental Compliance Program (PCAV) and the Environmentally Responsible Agave (ARA.) Furthermore, the programs Leaders in Sustainable Education, and Meat Free from Deforestation, are in the process of being prepared. Likewise, the carbon tax is under development in Jalisco, which seeks to encourage behaviors and the use of technologies that reduce carbon emissions as well as obtain resources to face the negative consequences that climate change has on the community.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco), with the support of SEMADET, encourages micro, small, and medium-sized companies belonging to the industrial sector of Jalisco to integrate and/or remain in the production chain, with the Reactiva program and the Green Incentive program, where more than 69 million pesos have been invested for the benefit of 346 companies. In this way, the adoption of new more sustainable production models is promoted, which generate greater competitiveness and business efficiency in order to combat climate change and promote environmental preservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.

Another present mechanism is the Green Financing program that offers preferential conditions to Jalisco companies for sustainable equipment and infrastructure projects. The financing operates in collaboration with SEDECO, SEMADET, and the Jalisco State Energy Agency. Under this scheme, more than 6 million pesos in credit have been granted.
