Guadalajara Intermodal Challenge Proves the Efficiency of Bicycling

15 trips, 5 municipalities, 3 types of transport, and the winner is: the Bicycle!

Within the framework of World Car-Free Day and Mobility Week, mobility agencies of the municipalities of Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, Tlajomulco and Tonalá, cycling groups, and the Metropolitan Agency for Mobility Infrastructure carried out the intermodal challenge in the metropolitan area with the objective of making visible, comparing, and evaluating the efficiency of three types of transport.

At 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning, teams of three people left by bicycle, public transport, and car to a central point on Av. Vallarta in Guadalajara, and making a route of between 7 and 29 km, through roads frequently used in each municipality.

The first to arrive from each team were those who used the bicycle, registering times of up to 40% less than the car.

For Alberto Moreno, cyclist and bicycle participant, it was an activity that demonstrates how the cycling infrastructure has encouraged people to use this noble mode of transport since it has provided safety to the cyclists who move around the city every day. "During my journey I was able to realize that I feel safer when traveling on the bike lanes, and although there is still a lot of respect and road culture in my city, I believe that we are progressing by leaps and bounds."

To close the activities of Mobility Week ending today, Friday September 24, the first intermodal tour with a gender perspective will be held, an initiative which seeks to inform road users on how to report and act in case they are witnesses or receive harassment in public places.

The tour starts at 6:00 p.m. from the Zapopan Centro station of Line 3 of Mi Tren, where the participants will travel by train to the Normal station (Cetram) to take the MiBici bicycles in the direction of the Municipal Palace of Guadalajara by Av. Alcalde. To finish there will be a walk to the Parque de la Revolución, and a a talk between each transportation change to explain the different harassment protocols. Registration for this activity can be done at the link bit.ly/3zoWyDN

At 10:00 pm, with the support of the Guadalajara Environment Department and the Metropolitan Agency for Urban Forests, a night ride will take place on the bike lanes of Manuel Ávila Camacho and Fray Antonio Alcalde Avenues. This activity will culminate with a workshop and planting of trees in the cycling infrastructure of the Glorieta de La Normal.
