Reservoir at the Calderón Dam Regains Its Water; Fish Population Still Low

The gradual reactivation of tourist activity and the recovery of the Calderón dam have favored the fishing cooperative of this reservoir.

Near the metropolis of Guadalajara, this organization has a module of tourist services that includes the sale of fish and shellfish already prepared.

The leader of this cooperative, José Vázquez Orozco, expressed that fortunately the recovery of the volume of this body of water has been abundant, which brings good signs that its volume will increase further in the remainder of the present season.

He mentioned that fortunately there has been a good influx of visitors on weekends and holidays, which is a source of income through the sale of fish caught in the reservoir.

He recalled that the crisis of the drying up of much of the water this past spring brought with it a drastic fall in the population of tilapia, "since they died as the dam ran out of water, which now it manifests itself with a very reduced catch, and that at the moment it only allows satisfying the demand of the clientele who go to the cooperative's restaurant.”

Faced with this situation, he pointed out that it is expected to have a strategy to carry out a fish stocking to recover the population that was lost, which will mean making internal agreements with the competent authorities in order to have the fish availability. In normal times the average annual catch of tilapia from this reservoir is 100 tons.

The Calderón dam has one of the tourism and fishing service modules promoted in recent years by the Jalisco Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the case of the Calderón dam, the tourist movement on weekends stands out in a restaurant owned by the cooperative members, which is next to a small floating dock. in addition to an in normal times. The entrance to the module is from the free highway to Tepatitlán.
