Jalisco Receives Over 9 Billion Tourist Pesos This Summer Season

During the 2021 summer vacation season, the state of Jalisco received an influx of 2,731,529 tourists.

With them came an economic benefit of 9,181,528,183 pesos in tourist spending, an increase of 5,563,842,568 pesos, representing a 153.8% increase compared to the same period of 2020, affected by the pandemic of COVID-19, as reported by the General Directorate of Planning and Development of Tourism Products, of the Ministry of Tourism of Jalisco.

Hotel occupancy throughout the state this summer reached an average of 49.64%, that is, 30.34% higher than that registered in the same period of 2020, in which occupancy was 19.3%, according to the DataTur platform.

During these vacations the influx of tourists was 2,731,529 people, an increase of 1,708,387 more people, or 166.97%, in the same period from 2020 to 2021.

With these estimates it is evidenced that the reactivation and recovery of tourism continues to advance positively in Jalisco.

Puerto Vallarta registered a tourist influx of 495,655 people with an economic spill of 2,290,629,370 pesos, and an average hotel occupancy of 62.80%, a figure that means 35.88% more than the previous year.

The Guadalajara Metropolitan Area obtained an influx of 1,533,541 tourists, a figure that represents an increase of 130.29% compared to the same period of 2020. The economic spill amounted to 5,813,956,981 pesos, and the average hotel occupancy was 42.5%.

Costalegre received an influx of 21,637 tourists, capturing 95,231,892 tourist pesos, and with hotel occupancy of 24.05%.

The Ribera de Chapala registered 35,823 tourists with a spill of 41,424,637 pesos, and an average hotel occupancy at 37.14%.

Finally, San Juan de los Lagos received 644,872 tourists spending 940,285,304 pesos, and an average hotel occupancy of 22.67%.

Due to the pandemic, it is noted that during the summer season the hotels maintained a capacity of no more than 80%, in accordance with the protocols authorized by the state Board of Health.

This report corresponds to data obtained from July 10 to August 29, 2021, in the five main tourist destinations in Jalisco: Puerto Vallarta, the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Costalegre, San Juan de los Lagos, and the Ribera de Chapala.

Regarding the Magical Towns of Jalisco, it is estimated that the hotel occupancy during the summer was as follows: Mascota with 57.75%; San Sebastián del Oeste with 40.68%; Tequila with 29%; Mazamitla with 74.7%, and Tapalpa with 48.71%. These last two mountain destinations were the ones that registered important increases compared to 2020: rising by 49.70%, and 33.71%, respectively.

Based on the weekly reports of the municipal tourism directorates, the Market Intelligence and Statistics Coordination of the Jalisco Secretary of Tourism estimates that of the occupancy percentages in the Magical Towns, San Sebastián del Oeste is the destination that presents a recovery at the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, which was 40.68%, although it continues in the process of improvement, and Mazamitla is at around 75% of the pre-pandemic percentages.
