Sinkhole on Highway 544 Mascota-Puerto Vallarta to be Repaired Monday

The sinkhole that emerged on Friday, August 20 at kilometer 61 of state highway 544 Mascota-Las Palmas-Puerto Vallarta, will finish being repaired on Monday, August 23.

It is estimated that, once the tests that guarantee the safety of users, the road will be reopened in its entirety on Tuesday 24.

The circulation is maintained with alternate passage through a road authorized by the Government of Jalisco.   the works will be borne by the contractor, as stipulated in the State Highway Plan.

This sinkhole arose because the drainage system originally built was insufficient to contain the rain runoff that in this area has been increasing. It will be completely replaced to reinforce and increase its hydraulic capacity by installing two drains of 1.20 meters in diameter.

The highway did not collapse thanks to the fact that the drains that will be replaced were clean and unclogged, which allowed the water to run under it.

The actions carried out in a 10-meter section of the 544 consist of laying the pipes, compacting the land until it reaches the subgrade, then filling the base and, finally, the reconstruction of the asphalt layer, a complete rehabilitation of this section of road.

With the support of the Road Police, the road was only partially closed, since a provisional crossing was enabled for vehicles to circulate alternately.

It should be emphasized that these actions and the general maintenance of the state highways are carried out by the contractor companies until the end of the six-year term, this being one of the benefits included in the multi-year model of the 2019-2024 Highway Plan implemented by the current administration.

As part of the routine works which are carried out during storms, the de-silting and monitoring of the drainage systems of state highway 544 will continue.
