209 Viral Variants Reported in Jalisco; Most Patients Not Vaccinated

At the international level and as a result of the genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, multiple variants of the virus have been detected.

Many of these mutations are already in Jalisco.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the variants according to the public health problem they represent: There are variants of interest (VOI) and variants of concern (VOC); the latter are considered a public health problem, since they have been shown to have the capacity to be more contagious, have a different clinical presentation, or have a greater lethality.

In Jalisco, as of July 20, 2021, the Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference and the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Federal Ministry of Health have received the notification of 209 variants detected, of which 73% correspond to variants of interest and 27% to variants of concern.

Of the infected patients, 96% had not received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, or had an incomplete vaccination schedule. 44% correspond to women and 56% to men. The age group most affected is 65 and over, followed by 35 to 39, and then 40 to 44 age group.

The Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) maintains genomic surveillance permanently and calls on the population to go to be vaccinated in the corresponding age group to cut the chains of infections and avoid presenting complications and serious cases.
