School Starting in Amigos de La Cruz Kid’s Club; Seeking More Sponsors

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a quiet small fishing village in the state of Nayarit with a total population of 1621 inhabitants.

It's between Punta de Mita and Bucerias, and is, more or less, 30 minutes from downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Amigos de La Cruz and its predecessor, APERCH, have been helping people in this small town since 2003, when the new highway to Punta de Mita was built.

Unexpectedly, La Cruz was left with an embankment and no entry into town. The residents and small business owners of La Cruz got together and petitioned the Municipal President for the construction of a town entrance, protection of their Huanacaxtle trees, more frequent garbage removal, more effective water treatment, and improved official communication through a town delegation.

Their efforts were successful and La Cruz now welcomes visitors to town with views of the glorieta and the sparkling waters of the Banderas Bay.  Encouraged, they continued working to improve garbage collection, street cleaning and communication with government officials.

The group is now known as Amigos de La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, A.C. They serve the community in various ways, including street cleaning, maintenance, and beautification; recycling and provision of garbage cans; stream, highway, and beach clean-up; Kid’s Club Program and Summer School, and children’s dental care.

Amigos de la Cruz Kids Club is looking forward to a new school year with our Learning Center (Centro de Aprendizaje) program beginning this Monday, September 6th. This program will be operating more as a self-contained school rather than providing assistance to virtual learning programs from the public school, adopting an established curriculum and lesson plans that are tailored directly to the needs and levels of the students.

This week was dedicated to class preparation, professional development and planning, organization and cleaning of the learning spaces, and enrollment of existing and new students. We also had a parent meeting and a workshop to help applicants write their letters and profiles for the "adopt a scholar" campaign that we plan to launch next week.

The "adopt a scholar" campaign is aimed at helping families with financial need to continue with the Kids Club education program. Please stay tuned to the newsletters and the Amigos Facebook page for information on how you can participate and sponsor a La Cruz child.

Kid’s Club Learning Center has modified the mission for the upcoming year to focus more on academic and intellectual growth but will continue providing many other enrichment and artistic programs, as well as classes in English.
The Objective of the Kid’s Club Learning Center is to:
"Contribute to academic and personal growth through knowledge, creativity and values. We will explore the potential of each student by providing the tools that allow them to successfully and independently grow.  Likewise, we will focus on promoting the strengthening of our ethical, civic and cultural values."

"Open Learning" classes and library services will still be offered on Wednesdays from 9 am to 3 pm to serve students not enrolled in the Kids Club Learning Center program.
