SADER Jalisco Continues Hurricane Damage Toll in Agricultural Sector

In a tour that has included land and air routes, SADER Jalisco reinforces field supervision to specify the damages that are had in the agricultural and fishing sectors.

The person in charge of the office of the Jalisco Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER,) Salvador Álvarez García, has led this operation in order to have direct information on the amount of the claims, in order to subsequently take support actions for the affected sectors.

The regions most affected by Hurricane Nora are the Coastal Regions, the Sierra de Amula, and the Sierra Occidental.

An important part of the production of the Jalisco countryside is concentrated in these three regions with a variety of products, such as livestock, tropical fruits, cereals, coffee, fish and aquaculture production, nightshades (various chilies and tomatoes), and others.

An example in this regard is the municipality of Cihuatlán, where considerable damage was found in 2,150 hectares plantations of horticultural products, and in some cases, are irreversible, such as in banana farms. 49 head of cattle were also damaged.

Álvarez García indicated that in this task there has been coordination with various official agencies, such as with the municipalities, the General Secretariat of Government, and the federal SADER, in what corresponds to the preliminary count of the effects in these sectors.

Among the preliminary damages already quantified, there are 1,500 hectares of chili in Mascota, 60 hectares of corn farms in Atenguillo, 200 hectares in Talpa, and 10 hectares in Guachinango.

Partial damages have been identified in 4,716 hectares in various crops in the municipality of Tomatlán; and another 2,165 in partial claims in the same municipality.

In addition, 820 hectares of yellow corn in Cabo Corrientes were destroyed leaving a total loss.

The state official added that the equipment provided by the program A Toda Máquina, both in the phase after the impact of this storm, and in the previous one, have been decisive in facing the ravages of the contingency.

He cited as an example that a border dam established a year ago in Cihuatlán on the Marabasco riverbed has played a highly relevant role in preventing floods that were continuously occurring in its surrounding areas, having a consequent negative impact on the nearby population and their growing areas.

Álvarez García added that the work of supporting machinery will continue to repair damage to local roads, harvesting routes, and the cleaning of riverbeds and beaches.
